Spooky Fall Favorites

October 11, 2011

If this picture doesn’t get you in the mood for Halloween, then I don’t know what will! Steve took this picture a few mornings ago while walking to work. On the bottom right of the picture you’ll see the edge of Blueberry Hill with a view out into the home field.

Now that you’re adequately spooked, it’s time to talk about some fall favorites around the farm.

American Beauty Heirloom Apple... She's a beaut, Clark!

APPLES! We have over 26 varieties in stock including all sorts of beautiful heirlooms – seven varieties of heirlooms to be exact! These “old faithfuls” are great keepers and are fabulous to bake with, or to munch on if you want instant gratification.

Spaghetti Squash "Small Wonder" is perfect for two!

We have all kinds of winter squash available to you this season. One of our most popular squashes is Spaghetti Squash. When cooked, the flesh is stringy just like its Italian namesake. Try it with pesto or pasta sauce as a main dish, or simply with butter and herbs as a side dish. To make Spaghetti Squash with Spinach, Feta, Basil and White Beans, find the recipe here!

We also have gorgeous kale coming in from the fields – Kale is a fall standby since it loves to grow in the cool weather. My favorite recipe is traditional Porguguese Kale Soup with Chorizo and beans. For my mother-in-law’s awesome Kale Soup recipe (and yes, it is awesome), click here.  Thanks, Bethany!
Don’t forget to sign up for the Apple Pie Baking Contest taking place this Saturday at noon! Tons of prizes up for grabs and a healthy dose of competition – with 19 contestants already signed up! Simply send an email with your full name and phone number to or sign up with any cashier at the farm! For rules, judges, and other important information scroll down a bit to the post entitled “Apple Pie Contest Next Weekend!”
Have a great week and we hope to see you down here soon!
